Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 may be over a year old now, but the 128GB version with the Intel Core i5 processor was still able to beat Apple’s iPad Air 2 and a number of Android-based tablets in a performance benchmark test.
The UK-based consumer watchdog group Which? used the Geekbench benchmark to compare the Surface Pro 3 to the iPad Air 2, along with the iPad mini 3, the Google Nexus 9, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 and other tablets. Thanks largely to the use of that Intel Core i5 chip, the 12-inch Surface Pro 3 was the winner in the Which? test.
- Microsoft Surface Pro 3 128GB i5: 5069
- Apple iPad Air 2: 4046
- Google Nexus 9: 3537
- Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 2014: 3060
- Apple iPad Air 32GB wi-fi: 2687
- Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1: 2650
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: 2594
- Asus MEMO Pad 7 ME572C: 2351
- Tesco Hudl 2: 2084
- Apple iPad mini 3: 1790
It should be noted that all that performance comes at a price for the Surface Pro 3. The 128GB Intel Core i5 version typically costs $ 999. The iPad Air 2, with 128GB of storage and the addition of wireless cellular support also to Wi-Fi, costs $ 829.
Of course, considering that the Surface Pro 3 is full PC and tablet these results are not too surprising. It would have been more shocking if the a Core i5 Surface Pro 3 had lost in a performance test. After all, running an Intel Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 processor is at the top of the line as you can get in mobile. However, this is the point Microsoft is trying to make: A Surface tablet (or PC) is the best you can get in terms of performance, features and mobility.
The next question we have is how would a Surface 3 fair in the same tests? Probably not a well.
