Tune your instrument on the go with Chromatic Tuner

One for musicians, particularly those who played stringed instruments, though the app description does say that you can use it to tune any instrument. Chromatic Tuner is just that, a chromatic tuner that you can have on you all the time on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone. I tend to tune by ear but sometimes it’s nice to let a tuner do the work for you. Join me as we take a closer look at Chromatic Tuner.

For this review, I’ll be tuning my guitar. Chromatic Tuner has a simple interface and is quick and easy to use. Just open the app and start tuning. Play the string you want to tune and the app starts to tell you how much it tuning it needs to get to the correct pitch. The description says it has accuracy to 0.1Hz and from using it I’d say it’s pretty accurate. By default it’s set to the frequency of 440Hz but you can change this by swiping down from the top and then go on to tap the grey box that contains 440 inside. When you tap it, it will look as if nothing happens but if you press delete on your keyboard it will delete the numbers. Just enter the new range you want to work with and press enter to set it. Tap anywhere else on the screen to remove the settings area. The tunable ranges go from E0 (20.60Hz) to B6 (1975.53Hz).

It’s a useful utility for musicians to carry around. The only downside with such tuners that need to listen out for tuning is that you need to be in a quite environment so that third party noise won’t affect the tuning. It’s more for back room tuning.

Chromatic Tuner is available for all BlackBerry 10 smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook, for those who still use one. It costs $ 1.99. Not bad compared to other tuners you can buy. And since you’ll have your phone on you all the time, you’ll always have the tuner with you.
