Android TV and similar set-top boxes are incredibly popular with the cord-cutting crowd. But if you still subscribe to cable, the various networks included with your package are finally getting their respective acts together and creating decent online options for streaming shows and movies. EPIX, a channel that’s mostly focused on playing older and second-run movies, has finally made its way to Android TV. The app went live back on June 9th, but for some reason the company is just announcing it now.
EPIX is one of several apps that was revealed in an NVIDIA blog post following the launch of the SHIELD. Like many Android TV apps, the EPIX app doesn’t use a separate listing on the Play Store – open up the Play Store on the web to send it directly to your Android TV device, or search for it manually on the device itself. You’ll need to log in with your cable or satellite information to access content… but the login option is notably missing Xfinity and DirecTV, because those providers don’t offer the channel in the first place.
The EPIX app for phones and tablets has performed poorly so far, with a collective 3.4 rating. Reviews cite poor compatibility and inconsistent streaming performance. Hopefully the experience is better on Android TV.
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Premium entertainment network EPIX announced that starting today Google’s Android TV will offer the EPIX app to its authenticated subscribers. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed. A leader in multiplatform availability, EPIX is the first premium network to launch on Android TV and this deal marks EPIX’s continued expansion across smart TV’s including Sony, Sharp, Philips and more.
The EPIX Android TV app will deliver four live EPIX channel feeds as well as streaming access to thousands of titles on-demand, including big movie franchises The Hunger Games, James Bond, and Star Trek, original documentaries and music and comedy events featuring marquee talent including Katy Perry, Craig Ferguson, Louis CK, Russell Brand and more. The app features a sleek new user interface, Rotten Tomatoes Ratings, global Google search integration, Android TV recommendations, plus movie trailers and entertainment extras.
“Our goal is to deliver exceptional content to our customers in as many ways as possible and we are thrilled to reach new and existing subscribers with Android TV,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with Google, which began with Chromecast last year, to offer subscribers an unparalleled entertainment experience how, when and where they want to see it.”
