81% sales growth for Xbox One from May 2014, PlayStation 4 takes overall lead in the U.S.

Xbox One

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One witnessed an impressive 81 percent increase in sales when compared to May 2014, although the console ultimately lost out to the PlayStation 4 over the course of the month.

While specific sales figures were not disclosed by NPD, total revenue generated from hardware sales in the U.S. was $ 153.6 million in May, down 18 percent year over year. Microsoft was not able to hold on to its lead from last month, with the Xbox One edging out the PlayStation 4 only twice in the last eight months.

That said, Microsoft was pleased with the increase in sales from last year. In a statement provided to VentureBeat:

Xbox One and Xbox Live continue to see strong growth in sales and engagement. Xbox One sales in the U.S. were up 81 percent over May 2014 and active global Xbox Live members, Xbox One and Xbox 360, were up 20 percent. We are grateful to our fans for choosing Xbox One and for making Xbox Live the fun and vibrant community that is. We can’t wait to share more on the greatest games lineup in Xbox history at E3 next week.

On the game-related front, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt debuted strongly, with the game already selling over four million units since its debut. Microsoft and Sony will be showcasing their upcoming titles at E3 next week, so stay tuned to Windows Central for all the coverage from the event.
