While the consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset may include Microsoft’s Xbox One wireless controller, the company is also working on its own controller prototype that is designed to help gamers “touch” and control virtual items with their hands and fingers.
The prototype is called, naturally, Oculus Touch, and it was shown today as part of the company’s press event by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. The Oculus Touch is actually two controllers, one for each hand that are mirror images of each other. Each of them contains analog buttons, a trigger and a stick, much like standard console gamepads.
However, Luckey says the big feature are the sensors that will be able to detech hand and finger movements as users control elements inside VR games. While today’s event didn’t actually show the Oculus Touch in action with a game, the company will be showing that feature off at E3 2015 next week in Los Angeles with their own demo game called Toybox. There’s no word on when Oculus Touch will be made available for the Oculus Rift.
