Yu takes on Xiaomi and Lenovo in India with metal-bodied Yuphoria for ₹6,999

Micromax’s wholly-owned subsidiary Yu Televentures launched its second handset — the Yuphoria — in India for ₹6,999 ($ 108), with the device going on sale from May 28.

During the launch event, Micromax revealed that the Yu Yuphoria was designed entirely in India, and that the device will be assembled in the country in the future (initial units will come from China). The highlight of the Yuphoria is a metal frame running along the sides of the phone, which is a first in this segment.

For the asking price, the Yuphoria comes with decent hardware, which includes:

  • 5-inch 720p display

  • 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC

  • 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory

  • 8MP camera at the back, 5MP shooter up front

  • LTE connectivity, dual-SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0

  • 2,230mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0

  • Cyanogen OS 12 atop Android 5.0

  • Buffed Steel and Champagne Gold color variants

Yu’s exclusive partnership with Cyanogen in India means that the Yuphoria is one of the first devices in this price bracket to offer Android 5.0 out of the box. The Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Lenovo A6000 — handsets that are being targeted by Yu with the Yuphoria — still come with Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Given the intense competition in this segment, the metal body, 2GB RAM and Cyanogen OS give the Yuphoria a distinct edge.

Registrations for the handset commence later today on Amazon India, which is carrying the Yuphoria exclusively in the country. Along with the phone, Yu launched a fitness tracker called the YuFit that will be available in June for ₹999 ($ 15). The fitness band is positioned against Xiaomi’s Mi Band, which is also available at the same price. The band comes with a display that lets you check incoming notifications from a connected smartphone, and has the ability to track steps and sleep activity. The wearable can be paired with your handset through the YuFit app.

Yu also launched a health monitoring utility called HealthYU. The cassette-sized device is loaded with sensors that allows you to measure ECG, skin temperature, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate and respiration rate. The device can be attached to the back of any smartphone, with Yu committing to an open platform. HealthYU is also launching in June, with a price tag of ₹4,999 ($ 78).
