Weekly poll results: are you buying a ZenFone 2?

The ASUS ZenFone 2 came to the stage this week, hot on the heels of flagships from three of the largest manufacturers in the world.

While this phone may not quite go toe-to-toe with the 2K displays and the phenomenal cameras we’ve seen from the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the LG G4, the ZenFone 2 is quite prepared to take on a few other well-known phones and the niches they currently fill. With features like Dual-SIM card slots, expandable storage, and a nice big battery that keeps going and going, the ZenFone 2 and its low price tag are certainly catching a number of users’ eyes, but how many of you are actually opening your hands, hearts and wallets to this scrappy new smartphone?

Quite a few of you it seems.

Of the five thousand or so readers responding this week, two thousand said no, you were not intending to buy the ZenFone 2. Many of you had already committed to the early flagships of the year, and others were holding out for Motorola and Google’s Nexus offerings in the fall. To those still thinking there could be a Nexus phone at Google I/O next week, it’s nice to dream, but I’m pretty confident it’s not happening.

Over a third of the responding users said that they were taking the ZenFone 2 home. Of these, a number of them were swayed over to the ZenFone 2 while they were mulling a possible OnePlus One purchase. This debate consumed many of the comment conversations in this week’s poll, debating the two phones at length. As those who were listening to our pre-I/O podcast on Friday know, we agree with that decision.

Another oft-repeated phrase in this week’s comments of those buying was ‘backup phone’. Indeed, for a price-performing phone that you hope you’ll never need to use, it’s hard to argue with the ZenFone 2, which packs some pretty impressive specs even for the lower-end $ 200 model. Of the 22 percent still mulling a purchase, the appeal of the ZenFone 2 as either a backup or a primary is hard to deny. Many also debating them for family members.
