Games

Broken Age

Android Police coverage: Double Fine Brings Crowdfunding Blockbuster ‘Broken Age’ To Android Ten Months Late

Broken Age is probably the most anticipated adventure game in years, at least for enthusiasts, after celebrity developer Tim Schaefer’s record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. The Android version includes both episodes of the split-narrative story, following both a girl in the past and a boy in the future. Intriguing hand-painted visuals and an all-star voice cast help justify a high price tag.

Broken Age is a family friendly, hand-animated, puzzle-filled adventure game with an all-star cast, including Elijah Wood, Jack Black and Masasa Moyo. Funded by a record breaking crowdfunding campaign and designed by industry legend Tim Schafer, Broken Age is a timeless coming-of-age story of barfing trees and talking spoons. Vella Tartine and Shay Volta are two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds.

TinyKeep

Android Police coverage: TinyKeep Spruces Up The Tired Dungeon Crawler Genre With Impressive Graphics And Physical Controls

It’s hard to remember the last time I saw an Android dungeon crawler that wasn’t trying to ape the 8-bit look, but this one goes straight for the high-end crowd. TinyKeep is a procedurally-generated top-down action RPG with full 3D graphics and fantastic controller support, a legacy of its PC roots. You’ll need a powerful machine to use it, preferably something with a Tegra processor, though this one isn’t an exclusive.

In TinyKeep players will embrace the role of a hopeless prisoner held deep in a forgotten dungeon who one day wakes up to find themselves mysteriously released. Their savior is nowhere to be seen, but the cell door is broken and ajar, tempting them with the sweet scent of freedom. With nothing but a flickering lantern and a strange letter left behind by their in-mate, they must venture into the darkness and escape TinyKeep.

Spellcrafter

Android Police coverage: Spellcrafter Is A Strategic RPG With Gesture-Based Spell Casting

Spellcrafter is an interesting top-down RPG with advanced 3D graphics and tactical combat – think X-COM or Final Fantasy Tactics. But rather than try to adapt a PC or console-style control scheme to mobile, the game takes advantage of the touchscreen format with gesture controls for casting spells, not unlike the less conventional portions of games like Okami. It gets bonus points for a fair price ($ 3) with no in-app purchases.

Spellcrafter is an RPG game with deep tactical turn-based combat and a unique spell casting system. Explore the magical world, collect gold, interact with NPCs, take quests and make moral choices. Recruit heroes, assemble and summon powerful troops and send them into battle. The unique feature of Spellcrafter is the spell casting system. The game recognizes the sign you draw on the screen and automatically chooses the appropriate spell from the spellbook.

Goat Simulator GoatZ

Android Police coverage: [Update: It’s Live] So BAAAAAA-d It’s Good: GoatZ Is Dragging Its Zombie Goat Survival Horror Simulation To Android On May 7th

Goat Simulator has always been something of a tongue-in-cheek critique of modern gaming, but this stand-alone expansion pack brings the parody to new heights. You play a goat struggling for survival in a zombie apocalypse… well, sort of. Survival really isn’t the goal, it’s more about exploring the zany map, messing with the intentionally buggy physics engine, and seeing how many of the game’s obtuse Easter eggs you can find. And yes, you can become a zombie goat if you so desire.

GoatZ is the latest official addition to the Goat Simulator universe, and is a fine contender for the dumbest thing to come from Coffee Stain Studios yet – GOATS AND ZOMBIES IN THE SAME GAME. Well if you’re not already yelling at your mom to buy the game for you right away, maybe this will impress you a bit more:

  • Official new app from the idiots that brought you Goat Simulator

  • Mandatory crafting system – Craft anything in the world, as long as it’s one of the half dozen weapons in the game.

  • Fully fledged survival mode where you have to eat every five minutes to survive, just like your grandmother.

  • Turn humans into Zombies and loot some crates. Just like your grandmother.

  • Tons of new unlockable goats with special powers – shrink people’s heads, hang glide, wreak havoc, spit and be a goat. For real.

Fist Puncher

Android Police coverage: Fist Puncher Is A $ 10, Kickstarter-Funded, NVIDIA SHIELD-Compatible, Android TV Supporting, Old-School 2D Brawler Now Available On Google Play

Fist Puncher is, as the name might suggest, an old-school beat-em-up in the fashion of Streets of Rage or Double Dragon. Smash your way through 50 levels as a variety of 80s action movie stereotypes using physical buttons on you HID controller, NVIDIA SHIELD, or Android TV hardware – touchscreen controls are not supported. The game never takes itself too seriously, which is certainly a blessing, since not even misty-eyed nostalgia types will do so.

The sinister Milkman holds the city of San Cruces in his nasty criminal grip, and it’s up to legendary black belt neurosurgeon Dr. Karate and the rest of the Fist Puncher team to deliver old-school justice to the lawless streets. Play it on NVIDIA SHIELD.

  • As featured in SHIELD Hub.

  • 19 playable characters, including Dr. Karate, Steroid Jackson, Hella Fistgerald and the Beekeeper.

  • RPG features allow you to assign attribute points to hone and sculpt your characters to your liking.

  • Purchase perks including new moves and powers for your characters.

  • Over 50 levels, including a a nude beach, a slaughterhouse, and an ostrich farm.

  • 99 unlockable achievement trading cards – collect them all.

  • Over 100 collectible items.

  • Attack with tasers, slingshots, guns, bombs and more.

  • Throw cars, cows, dogs, street musicians and whatever else you can pick up.

Ys Chronicles 1

Android Police coverage: DotEmu Brings Ys Chronicles 1, An Update To A Classic 80s Action-RPG, To Android And Android TV

It’s nice to finally get some classic Japanese role-playing games that don’t come from Squaresoft or Enix. Ys Chronicles I is a remastered version of Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen with new graphics, anime-style cutscenes, and full touch controls. This series of action RPGs isn’t a blockbuster outside of Japan, but it’s definitely worth the price for gamers who don’t want turn-based battles, and no one makes better Android ports than DotEmu.

In Ys, you play as Adol Christin, an adventurous young swordsman. Early in the story, you find yourself on a mysterious beach in Esteria, a kingdom whose cities are besieged by hordes of demoniac creatures. Esteria’s people are depending on you to defeat the demons and free the kingdom. To accomplish your goal, you must find six sacred books containing the history of the ancient land of Ys; books which will also provide you with the knowledge to restore peace.

Grim Fandango Remastered

Android Police coverage: Double Fine Productions Brings Grim Fandango Remastered To Android, On Sale For Launch At $ 9.99

Broken Age isn’t the only Tim Schaefer opus to grace the roundup this week. Grim Fandango is widely considered one of the best point-and-click adventure games ever made, and now it can be had on Android for the hefty sum of ten bucks. You play a cheeky and sarcastic skeleton who works as an afterlife travel agent, or at least that’s how he starts out. The 3D graphics in Grim Fandango are a bit dated, but the Dia de los Muertos style still holds some charm.

One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is now back, better than ever. Grim Fandango’s epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot’s Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore.

LEGO® Star Wars™: TCS

Android Police coverage: [Update: Back On Amazon] LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga Touches Down In The Play Store, Still MIA From Amazon

Star Wars was one of LEGO’s very first licensed pop culture products, and this collection of simple kid’s video games from back in the PS2 era was well-received at the time. This $ 7 pack includes a story that spans all six current Star Wars movies with dozens of mini-fig characters, playing through basic platforming and puzzle segments. It’s a lot of game for seven bucks and includes no in-app purchases, but adults who aren’t fans of the films will quickly grow bored.

Experience the entire collection that combines the original LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and the sequel LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy for hours of epic Star Wars content and fun gameplay all from your Android device. Begin your adventure in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and journey through all six episodes in the whimsical style and humor of LEGO. May the bricks be with you.

Earn to Die 2

Android Police coverage: Earn To Die 2 Speeds Through Several Dozen Zombies And Crashes Into The Play Store

Mix the accelerate-and-orientate gameplay of Trials with a 2D zombie apocalypse setting and you’ll get Earn To Die. The sequel to the original mobile game offers quite a few more features than the simple gameplay might suggest, including an impressive amount of vehicle and weapon customization, plus a full story mode. The game is free with in-app purchases, but what few it has are unusually reasonable.

Drive your car through a zombie apocalypse in this massive follow-up to the chart-topping hit Earn to Die. An evacuation ship is waiting on the other side of the country. The only thing that stands in your way: city after city overrun by zombies . With only a run-down car and a small amount of cash you face a familiar situation… to drive through hordes of zombies in order to survive. Earn to Die 2 introduces a massive new Story Mode, five times longer than its predecessor.

Fruit Ninja: Math Master

Android Police coverage: Fruit Ninja: Math Master Is An Educational Take On A Popular Game That Adds A $ 5 Price Tag And Subtracts The IAPs

Nobody tell HalfBrick, but Fruit Ninja might not be the all-encompassing media sensation that they seem to think it is, and which would justify a licensed children’s math game. Even so, this looks like a pretty decent way for kids to kill some time on a long trip, mixing basic arithmetic with some of the original game’s swipe-based mechanics. And like all responsible games aimed at children, this one has no in-app purchases. Nice.

The world-famous fun of Fruit Ninja meets the very best in educational apps in Fruit Ninja Academy: Math Master. This is the perfect learning companion for ages 5 – 7. Join the Fruit Ninjas in an exciting adventure through jungles, temples and ancient ruins. The curious (and hungry) pig Truffles finds himself in a sticky situation, so Katsuro and his friends must journey to find the Lost Tablets of Fruitasia to rescue him.

Disney Infinity: Toy Box 2.0

Android Police coverage: Disney’s Infinity Digital Toys Finally Come To Android With The Toy Box 2.0 App

Disney Infinity is the megacorp’s take on toy-game combos like Skylanders, and it has so far proven to be a money-making machine. This is the first version of the game to come to mobile, allowing spoiled kids to play in the sandbox mode with their collected plastic figurines. Technically the game is free, but you only have access to a few random and cycling characters without buying the toys and activating them, either with the console game or online via code.

Disney Infinity: Toy Box 2.0 is here. Create your own worlds and games starring over 60 of your favorite Marvel and Disney characters. Marvel Super Heroes come to Disney Infinity: Toy Box 2.0, with some of your favorite characters including the Avengers, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Also explore some of your favorite Disney and Disney/Pixar characters from Frozen (Elsa & Anna), Big Hero 6 (Hiro & Baymax), Brave (Merida), Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters Inc, and more in Disney Infinity: Toy Box 2.0.

MARVEL Future Fight

Android Police coverage: Future Fight, A Free To Play Marvel Universe Beat-Em-Up, Gets An International Release In The Play Store

Future Fight is a basic 3D dungeon-crawler with a Marvel Comics (not movies) theme. Pick three heroes or villains, sit through some static text-only story babble, then go out and beat the crap out if a ton of low-grade minions and maybe a boss or two. The graphics and combos are interesting enough, but not so compelling that conventional gamers will be able to look past the mountain of IAP for energy, character unlocks, and grinding upgrades.

The Avengers…Spider-Man…the Guardians of the Galaxy. You can unite the greatest heroes from all corners of the Marvel Universe for the epic battle that will decide the fate of all realities – MARVEL Future Fight. S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury has sent a dire call from the future: The multiple dimensions of the multiverse are collapsing upon each other – and it’s up to you to ensure humanity survives. Gather the mightiest Super Heroes and Super Villains, assemble your team, and protect the universe at all costs.

MORTAL KOMBAT X

Android Police coverage: High-Profile Gory Fighter Mortal Kombat X (Or At Least The Free-To-Play Mobile Version) Is Now Available On The Play Store

The Mortal Kombat series needs no introduction, but this mobile version of the gory fighter bears more in common with Warner Bros. other 2D fighters than its console release. A series of swipes and taps will see you through various game modes with a maximum of four fighters to a side. The graphics are pretty and suitably cringe-inducing, but in order to collect the multitude of characters you’ll need to spend a small fortune on in-app purchases or spend weeks grinding away.

Experience the over-the-top, visceral fighting of MORTAL KOMBAT X. Bring the power of next-gen gaming to your mobile and tablet device with this visually groundbreaking fighting and card collection game. Assemble an elite team of Mortal Kombat warriors and prove yourself in the greatest fighting tournament on Earth. Create your own team of Mortal Kombat fighters and lead them into battle to earn experience, new special attacks, and powerful artifacts.

Skullduggery!

Skullduggery is an interesting mix of platforming elements and the slingshot mechanic from Angry Birds. It’s also deliciously offbeat: you play an animate skull in the hire of the Infernal Revenue Service, beating up delinquent undead tax evaders (get it?) by stretching out your own brain matter and flinging yourself through the levels. A single $ 5 in-app purchase removes ads and unlocks some of the game’s more intricate features.

You know the old saying, “you can’t take it with you?” Well, we’ve got news for you, my friends, they were WRONG. “Deadbeats” have been taking their riches with them to the afterlife for centuries and it’s the job of the INFERNAL Revenue Service — and its army of skulls — to collect. That’s where you come in. In “Skullduggery.” you’ll play a Semi-Organic Autonomous Skull employed as a collection agent for the IRS. Using the elasticity of your own brain, flick yourself around the fortresses of the afterlife’s biggest deadbeats.

The Enchanted Cave 2

Dustin Auxier’s original Enchanted Cave game was an impressive if simple adaptation of standard dungeon crawlers (or “roguelikes” as they seem to be called these days). The sequel adds some better graphics, a larger, more interesting dungeon to explore, and a revamped inventory and special attack system. The progression tree will allow you to tune your skills to your desired fantasy class.

Delve into a strange cave with a seemingly endless supply of treasure, strategically choosing your battles to gather as much treasure as possible. Find rare artifacts, gold, and stat gems, and traverse the skill tree to become your choice of a mage, warrior, alchemist, or a mix of skills. Craft potions, enchant your equipment, and discover secret areas. But be careful because the cave has become quite dangerous lately with more explorers going missing every day…

SwapQuest

RPGs and puzzle games have been getting very cozy as of late. The newest combination of the two genres is SwapQuest, which uses the familiar tile-swapping mechanic to facilitate your hero’s progression through the various battle zones. The characters move along the paths on a grid, attacking and collecting loot automatically, so your selections will guide their progression. A basic story and leveling system are included, and a single $ 2 IAP unlocks the full game.

SwapQuest is a captivating new mix of easy-to-learn puzzle mechanics and old-school RPG elements. The kingdom of Aventana is under attack by a demon cloud known as the Horde. Many legends tell of its destructive power and how it devoures everything in reach. Will you become the hero Aventana needs? Can you find the magical sword that is said to be powerful enough to defeat the Horde?

Dungeon Highway Adventures

Dungeon Highway Adventures mixes 3D “voxel” graphics with a tilting endless runner structure. It’s also hilariously violent – who knew a bunch of 8-bit monsters could bleed like tertiary Tarantino characters? The game is simple but charming, though you’re out of luck if you’d like tap movement controls. It does have in-app purchases for currency, but a $ 2 purchase will banish ads forever.

If you didn’t get your fill of your own gory, pixelated demise the first time around, Dungeon Highway Adventures brings you more chances to explode in a shower of blocky goo. With new levels, obstacles, enemies, and artwork, coupled with an all new item system, you can die like it’s the first time all over again. Hopefully you’ll take out some of the dungeon creatures along the way.

Cooped Up

Cooped Up takes the flinging game mechanic from Angry Birds and, with no small amount of self-awareness, re-purposes it for a new take on the “jumping” genre. Said games have gone out of style in the last year or so, but Cooped Up has enough of it to go around. Fling your tiny, dead-eyed songbird from line to line, alternately avoiding or smashing through obstacles. A single $ 3 IAP removes advertising.

You are the latest addition in the exotic bird sanctuary. The other older birds have been Cooped Up a little too long and are a branch short of a perch. Ahhemmm… they is a bit crazy. Fling yourself up up and away but watch out, there’s more than just birds that you must avoid. However don’t be afraid to snack on the way… and don’t let the other birds laughing at you get you down. Pick yourself up and twang twang twang again.

Partyrs

On the surface Partyrs is a simple tile-switching game where the tiles have been replaced with charming little pixelated characters. And that’s basically it, but the creativity in the level design is what will keep you coming back. Swap characters around the room/woods/cold and unfeeling vacuum of space to get them what they want, whether that’s closer to the music, in proximity with another guest, or something a little more kooky.

Thirty cheerful creatures are having a party. Beginning with a funny music-loving alien to a lazy elephant: Some pretty funny guys are invited. They are all fond of a great party and it’s your task to host it. your job to keep everyone happy. But the Partyrs are pretty choosey. Tap to see what a Partyr wants and use your brian, swap the Partyrs around and help everyone to have a good time.

Fish Pond Park

The latest management sim from Kairosoft has you taking control of… a fish pond. A commercialized fish pond, mind you – something between a hatchery and a safari hunting ground. You’ll have to build up your facilities and raise fish from hatchlings in order to populate your park, then attract visitors who are looking for that big catch. Unlike some of the more recent Kairosoft games, Fish Pond Park uses a conventional premium model.

Nurture an idyllic slice of tourist’s heaven into the top nature spot of the nation, furnishing it with a variety of services like inns, tours, and more. Mix and match areas of your wooded wonderland to concoct exciting outdoor attractions that appeal to sightseers’ sweet spots. Which combinations make what? Energize that outdoorsman’s spirit and experiment for yourself. Any pond or river also doubles as an aquatic habitat for fry–which you can raise for later fishing excursions in the all-new fishing mode.

The Ramen Sensei

Kairosoft seems to be branching into more and more obscure areas for its latest business managements sims. This one lets you take control of a gourmet ramen noodle shop – apparently the dorm food staple has come up in the world, at least in Japan. All of the standard Kairosoft tropes are here, plus the ability to build custom menu items. Like the developer’s original games, this one is a premium offering with no in-app purchases.

Build your ramen rep by fashioning the ultimate bowl from a vast assortment of noodles, soup, and toppings. From roast pork to miso, mackerel, and more–the only limit is your imagination, meaning you’ll need to use your noodle to nail the right recipes and bring hungry customers in by the crowd. Enter contests and see how you size up against rivals, thus cementing your standing as superlative sensei of the savory. Succeed–and one day you might even have your own ramen theme park.

GA 10: Lords of Nurroth

Tin Man’s latest game book is the tenth story set in the Orlandes universe, following the first-person tale of a thief who uncovers a shadowy secret. If you’ve played any of Tin Man’s RPG-slash-Choose Your Own Adventure games before, you know what to expect: lots of reading and tabletop-style character progression. This one is on sale for half off at the time of writing.

Nurroth, north of Orlandes City, is often viewed as an uncultured den of pirates and thieves. As a professional thief yourself, you get more than you bargain for after completing your most recent job. Clearly, you’ve stolen something you shouldn’t have. The Nurrothian Lords are on your trail, and you’re soon caught in a political tangle between Nurroth and Falavia. But a thief’s life is never meant to be easy…

Wings Remastered

Wings was one of the first dogfighting games to include a pilot’s eye view battle mode, but the game itself was actually much more interested in telling its WWI story. This remastered edition switches to 3D graphics, but keeps the triple game modes: first-person dogfighting, top-down bombing, and isometric strafing runs. Nostalgic for the original 2D visuals? The original Amiga game is also available on the Play Store.

Cinemaware’s classic Wings. gets re-mastered in high definition with all its original missions, dogfights, story and gameplay. Relive the action, glory and seat of the pants daring of a WWI Allied fighter pilot. You’ll strafe Hun armies, bomb enemy aerodromes and match wits against deadly Aces in heart-stopping dogfights, the loser going down in flames…without a parachute. More than just a simulator, Wings. features genuine arcade action and an emotion-packed role-playing experience.

Battledots

Battledots takes the concept of lane-based strategy and boils it down to its purest elements, replacing all units and attacks with dots. It’s kind of like Stratego played out in real time on an abacus. You get a limited amount of resources to spend on defending and attacking, so choosing the lane in which to make your stand is vital to winning. Online multiplayer and single-device multiplayer are included, and you get it all for one dollar.

Battledots is an intense, fast-paced strategy game where you must attack the opponent while defending your base, and everything is done with dots. There are 15 dots to choose from, and each one has its own unique abilities that will aid or hurt you in battle.

• Over 100 Levels
• Over 15 different Dots with unique abilities
• 5 powerful Bonus-Dots
• Endless-Mode with Leaderboard
• Local Multiplayer: Play against a friend on one Device.
• Cross-Platform Online-Multiplayer

Indefinite

Indefinite is a fascinating minimal game that puts you in the shoes of a suspect under interrogation. All you have to do is answer rapid-fire questions. But be careful: if you don’t keep your answers straight or you take too long to reply (even to the uncomfortable ones), the interrogation is over. The chilling after-action report tells you what the authorities decided to do with you… and your family. This is the rare text-based game that manages to be both simple and incredibly unsettling at the same time.

What is Indefinite? Indefinite. It doesn’t quite fit into any genre. You might call it an interrogation simulator, a text-based memory quiz, or a dystopian interactive fiction game. Were you the mastermind behind The Incident, or merely a pawn? As you play, you will unravel the mysterious circumstances behind a catastrophic global incident.
