The Android version includes both episodes of the split-narrative story, following both a girl in the past and a boy in the future. Intriguing hand-painted visuals and an all-star voice cast help justify a high price tag.

Broken Age is a family friendly, hand-animated, puzzle-filled adventure game with an all-star cast, including Elijah Wood, Jack Black and Masasa Moyo. Funded by a record breaking crowdfunding campaign and designed by industry legend Tim Schafer, Broken Age is a timeless coming-of-age story of barfing trees and talking spoons. Vella Tartine and Shay Volta are two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds.
TinyKeep
Android Police coverage: TinyKeep Spruces Up The Tired Dungeon Crawler Genre With Impressive Graphics And Physical Controls
It’s hard to remember the last time I saw an Android dungeon crawler that wasn’t trying to ape the 8-bit look, but this one goes straight for the high-end crowd. TinyKeep is a procedurally-generated top-down action RPG with full 3D graphics and fantastic controller support, a legacy of its PC roots. You’ll need a powerful machine to use it, preferably something with a Tegra processor, though this one isn’t an exclusive.

In TinyKeep players will embrace the role of a hopeless prisoner held deep in a forgotten dungeon who one day wakes up to find themselves mysteriously released. Their savior is nowhere to be seen, but the cell door is broken and ajar, tempting them with the sweet scent of freedom. With nothing but a flickering lantern and a strange letter left behind by their in-mate, they must venture into the darkness and escape TinyKeep.
Spellcrafter
Android Police coverage: Spellcrafter Is A Strategic RPG With Gesture-Based Spell Casting
Spellcrafter is an interesting top-down RPG with advanced 3D graphics and tactical combat – think X-COM or Final Fantasy Tactics. But rather than try to adapt a PC or console-style control scheme to mobile, the game takes advantage of the touchscreen format with gesture controls for casting spells, not unlike the less conventional portions of games like Okami. It gets bonus points for a fair price ($ 3) with no in-app purchases.

Survival really isn’t the goal, it’s more about exploring the zany map, messing with the intentionally buggy physics engine, and seeing how many of the game’s obtuse Easter eggs you can find. And yes, you can become a zombie goat if you so desire.

GoatZ is the latest official addition to the Goat Simulator universe, and is a fine contender for the dumbest thing to come from Coffee Stain Studios yet – GOATS AND ZOMBIES IN THE SAME GAME. Fist Puncher

Fist Puncher is, as the name might suggest, an old-school beat-em-up in the fashion of Streets of Rage or Double Dragon. Smash your way through 50 levels as a variety of 80s action movie stereotypes using physical buttons on you HID controller, NVIDIA SHIELD, or Android TV hardware – touchscreen controls are not supported. The game never takes itself too seriously, which is certainly a blessing, since not even misty-eyed nostalgia types will do so.

Ys Chronicles 1
Android Police coverage: DotEmu Brings Ys Chronicles 1, An Update To A Classic 80s Action-RPG, To Android And Android TV
It’s nice to finally get some classic Japanese role-playing games that don’t come from Squaresoft or Enix. Ys Chronicles I is a remastered version of Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen with new graphics, anime-style cutscenes, and full touch controls. This series of action RPGs isn’t a blockbuster outside of Japan, but it’s definitely worth the price for gamers who don’t want turn-based battles, and no one makes better Android ports than DotEmu.

In Ys, you play as Adol Christin, an adventurous young swordsman. Early in the story, you find yourself on a mysterious beach in Esteria, a kingdom whose cities are besieged by hordes of demoniac creatures. Esteria’s people are depending on you to defeat the demons and free the kingdom. To accomplish your goal, you must find six sacred books containing the history of the ancient land of Ys; books which will also provide you with the knowledge to restore peace.
Grim Fandango Remastered

Broken Age isn’t the only Tim Schaefer opus to grace the roundup this week. Grim Fandango is widely considered one of the best point-and-click adventure games ever made, and now it can be had on Android for the hefty sum of ten bucks. You play a cheeky and sarcastic skeleton who works as an afterlife travel agent, or at least that’s how he starts out. The 3D graphics in Grim Fandango are a bit dated, but the Dia de los Muertos style still holds some charm.

Star Wars was one of LEGO’s very first licensed pop culture products, and this collection of simple kid’s video games from back in the PS2 era was well-received at the time. This $ 7 pack includes a story that spans all six current Star Wars movies with dozens of mini-fig characters, playing through basic platforming and puzzle segments. It’s a lot of game for seven bucks and includes no in-app purchases, but adults who aren’t fans of the films will quickly grow bored.

The sequel to the original mobile game offers quite a few more features than the simple gameplay might suggest, including an impressive amount of vehicle and weapon customization, plus a full story mode. The game is free with in-app purchases, but what few it has are unusually reasonable.

Nobody tell HalfBrick, but Fruit Ninja might not be the all-encompassing media sensation that they seem to think it is, and which would justify a licensed children’s math game. Even so, this looks like a pretty decent way for kids to kill some time on a long trip, mixing basic arithmetic with some of the original game’s swipe-based mechanics. And like all responsible games aimed at children, this one has no in-app purchases. Nice.

Disney Infinity is the megacorp’s take on toy-game combos like Skylanders, and it has so far proven to be a money-making machine. This is the first version of the game to come to mobile, allowing spoiled kids to play in the sandbox mode with their collected plastic figurines. Technically the game is free, but you only have access to a few random and cycling characters without buying the toys and activating them, either with the console game or online via code.

Android Police coverage: Future Fight, A Free To Play Marvel Universe Beat-Em-Up, Gets An International Release In The Play Store
Future Fight is a basic 3D dungeon-crawler with a Marvel Comics (not movies) theme. Pick three heroes or villains, sit through some static text-only story babble, then go out and beat the crap out if a ton of low-grade minions and maybe a boss or two. The graphics and combos are interesting enough, but not so compelling that conventional gamers will be able to look past the mountain of IAP for energy, character unlocks, and grinding upgrades.

The Mortal Kombat series needs no introduction, but this mobile version of the gory fighter bears more in common with Warner Bros. other 2D fighters than its console release. A series of swipes and taps will see you through various game modes with a maximum of four fighters to a side. The graphics are pretty and suitably cringe-inducing, but in order to collect the multitude of characters you’ll need to spend a small fortune on in-app purchases or spend weeks grinding away.

A single $ 5 in-app purchase removes ads and unlocks some of the game’s more intricate features.

Dustin Auxier’s original Enchanted Cave game was an impressive if simple adaptation of standard dungeon crawlers (or “roguelikes” as they seem to be called these days). The sequel adds some better graphics, a larger, more interesting dungeon to explore, and a revamped inventory and special attack system. The progression tree will allow you to tune your skills to your desired fantasy class.

The characters move along the paths on a grid, attacking and collecting loot automatically, so your selections will guide their progression. A basic story and leveling system are included, and a single $ 2 IAP unlocks the full game.

Dungeon Highway Adventures
Dungeon Highway Adventures mixes 3D “voxel” graphics with a tilting endless runner structure. It’s also hilariously violent – who knew a bunch of 8-bit monsters could bleed like tertiary Tarantino characters? The game is simple but charming, though you’re out of luck if you’d like tap movement controls. It does have in-app purchases for currency, but a $ 2 purchase will banish ads forever.

If you didn’t get your fill of your own gory, pixelated demise the first time around, Dungeon Highway Adventures brings you more chances to explode in a shower of blocky goo. With new levels, obstacles, enemies, and artwork, coupled with an all new item system, you can die like it’s the first time all over again. Hopefully you’ll take out some of the dungeon creatures along the way.
Cooped Up
Cooped Up takes the flinging game mechanic from Angry Birds and, with no small amount of self-awareness, re-purposes it for a new take on the “jumping” genre. Said games have gone out of style in the last year or so, but Cooped Up has enough of it to go around. Fling your tiny, dead-eyed songbird from line to line, alternately avoiding or smashing through obstacles. A single $ 3 IAP removes advertising.

You are the latest addition in the exotic bird sanctuary. The other older birds have been Cooped Up a little too long and are a branch short of a perch. Ahhemmm… they is a bit crazy. Fling yourself up up and away but watch out, there’s more than just birds that you must avoid. However don’t be afraid to snack on the way… and don’t let the other birds laughing at you get you down. Pick yourself up and twang twang twang again.
Partyrs
On the surface Partyrs is a simple tile-switching game where the tiles have been replaced with charming little pixelated characters. And that’s basically it, but the creativity in the level design is what will keep you coming back. Swap characters around the room/woods/cold and unfeeling vacuum of space to get them what they want, whether that’s closer to the music, in proximity with another guest, or something a little more kooky.

Fish Pond Park
The latest management sim from Kairosoft has you taking control of… a fish pond. A commercialized fish pond, mind you – something between a hatchery and a safari hunting ground. You’ll have to build up your facilities and raise fish from hatchlings in order to populate your park, then attract visitors who are looking for that big catch. Unlike some of the more recent Kairosoft games, Fish Pond Park uses a conventional premium model.

The Ramen Sensei
Kairosoft seems to be branching into more and more obscure areas for its latest business managements sims. This one lets you take control of a gourmet ramen noodle shop – apparently the dorm food staple has come up in the world, at least in Japan. All of the standard Kairosoft tropes are here, plus the ability to build custom menu items. Like the developer’s original games, this one is a premium offering with no in-app purchases.

GA 10: Lords of Nurroth
Tin Man’s latest game book is the tenth story set in the Orlandes universe, following the first-person tale of a thief who uncovers a shadowy secret. If you’ve played any of Tin Man’s RPG-slash-Choose Your Own Adventure games before, you know what to expect: lots of reading and tabletop-style character progression. This one is on sale for half off at the time of writing.

Indefinite
Indefinite is a fascinating minimal game that puts you in the shoes of a suspect under interrogation. All you have to do is answer rapid-fire questions. The chilling after-action report tells you what the authorities decided to do with you… and your family. This is the rare text-based game that manages to be both simple and incredibly unsettling at the same time.
