The latest Xbox One software update goes live with voice message support and more

Microsoft’s May software update for all Xbox One consoles is now live and rolling out to its users. This update finally brings a much requested feature, voice messages, to the Xbox One. It’s been in testing for some time to members of the Xbox One preview program.

Basically, Xbox One users will be able to send and receive voice messages via their headset or their Kinect add-on to both Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles once they download and install the update. It also adds a way to turn the console on and off remotely via the Xbox SmartGlass app.

The May update also brings the previously announced changes to the Xbox One initial setup. This will give owners a choice of using the “Instant-on” power mode, which keeps the console on so it can receive updates automatically, or “Energy-saving” mode, which makes the user turn the Xbox One on manually.

Finally, there’s been some additions to party chat. Microsoft says:

“Back in March, we enabled dedicated chat relay servers for Xbox One preview members to solve NAT traversal issues that prevented some people from being able to use party chat. Over the coming weeks, we will start to expand the availability of the party chat relay services beyond preview members to a broader audience as we continue to fine tune the feature and scale out the servers needed to support party chat relay services.”
