Net Applications has posted its desktop operating system market share numbers for April 2015, showing a small gain for Windows 8.1 worldwide. It also showed that the 13-year old Windows XP took another big drop.
Net Applications, which gathers its data by monitoring PC access to thousands of websites, says that in April, Windows 8.1 had 11.16% of the desktop PC OS market share. That’s up from 10.55% in March. The older Windows 8 claimed 3.50% in April, a tiny bit lower than its 3.52% share in March. Windows 7 remained the number one used PC operating system with a market share of 58.39% in April, a little higher than its 58.04% share in March.
Windows XP, which is no longer supported by Microsoft, is still in second place but its market share went down to 15.93% in April, compared to its 16.94% share in March, and well below its 19.15% share in February. Windows Vista had just 1.95% in April, slightly behind the 1.97% share in March. The preview version of Windows 10 was used by 0.09% of all PCs worldwide in April, which is the same amount it had in March.
