HTC Vive and SteamVR will add Unreal Engine 4 support for better-looking games

Epic Games will include support for the HTC Vive virtual reality headset and SteamVR in the next public version of its Unreal Engine 4 game development tools.

This means that the HTC Vive will, in theory, be able to play a larger number of games. Unreal Engine 4 is already being used to create a wide variety of titles, and recently Epic Games decided to get rid of its monthly fee for developing games with the engine. Epic Games said:

Unreal Engine 4 enables developers to consistently deploy high-fidelity, high frame rate experiences across all major VR platforms. SteamVR with Unreal Engine 4 is plug-and-play, and with the full advantage of features such as room-scale VR, input, and Lighthouse, Valve’s laser-based tracking solution.

SteamVR is completely integrated into Unreal Engine 4 across Blueprint visual scripting and native code, so projects can be built without dependency on programmer support if desired.

Unreal Engine 4 will add HTC Vive support next week when it launches versions 4.8. HTC Vive is currently scheduled for a consumer launch late in 2015. We got a chance to get some hands-on impressions of the headset in March during Mobile World Congress 2015.
