Microsoft publishes design guidelines for Windows 10 Universal Apps

Microsoft publishes design guidelines for Windows 10 Universal Apps

Microsoft has published its design guidelines for building Universal Apps on Windows 10. The new documentation outlines designing apps for Windows 10 on PCs, phones, and tablets.

The guide is split into three primary sections: Design basics, Guidelines, and Design downloads. Design basics covers the fundamentals of designing for multiple screen sizes. You can get a primer on different phones, tablets, and PCs, and follow Microsoft’s process for planning an application.

The Guidelines section covers best practices for everything from animations to user interactions. It breaks down into articles on specific aspects of each section, such has how to add and delete animations, set up app contracts for location-aware apps, and more.

You can also download a number of templates to get started on designing your Universal app. The templates have date pickers, icons, and more. You can download templates for PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Illustrator. You can also grab the redliner tool for Adobe Illustrator.

Top 6 cases for Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Are you protecting your Galaxy S6 edge with a case or leaving it up to chance that its curves will offer enough grip to keep it off the ground?

When it comes to cases, most of us have our favorites that we tend to stick with — whether they be affordable for your budget or designed to deal with damage better than the rest. Once in a while, though, it’s good to branch out from that comfort zone to try something new for an even newer device.

We’ve selected 6 cases for the Galaxy S6 edge that include staff favorites, as well as community choices from the forums. Simply great cases that will keep your device safe from wear and tear.

READ NOW: Top 6 cases for Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

1. Spigen Slim Armor Case with Kickstand

Spigen Slim Armor Case

Sporting a slim design with both TPU and polycarbonate layers is Spigen’s Slim Armor Case. Truly a fan favorite when it comes to the best cases.

The 1.2mm raised lip keeps your Galaxy S6 edge’s display from touching any surface while Spigen’s “Air Cushion Technology” helps to handle serious impacts on all 4 corners. And, for the kickstand lovers out there, the Slim Armor Case comes with its own integrated kickstand that folds flush when not in use.

Buy the Spigen Slim Armor

2. Ringke Fusion Crystal Hard Case

Ringke Fusion Case

We have a special love for clear cases, and one we’ve always enjoyed is Ringke’s Fusion Crystal Hard Case. All transparent without the bulk.

After snapping your Galaxy S6 edge into this crystal hard case, you gain protection from scuffs, scratches and minor impacts. You’ll also find dust caps (port covers) on the bottom of the case — which depending on your preference — may or may not be ideal. If the complete clear look isn’t for you, there’s a tinted smoke option to choose from as well.

Buy the Ringke Fusion Case

3. Samsung S-View Flip Cover

Samsung S-View Cover

Given that Samsung’s S-View Cover for the Galaxy S6 edge has a more unique design over previous versions this time around, we felt it deserved a spot on this list.

The traditional, smaller clear acrylic window of the S-View has been dropped with this model — being replaced with a full-screen, tinted transparent front cover that has quite a reflection to it. You can still manage incoming calls and other notifications through the cover while staying protected from front to back. It does have a little more thickness to it, but the case definitely looks sharp around the Galaxy S6 edge.

4. Verus Thor Active Case

For a little more heavy duty protection, we’ve chosen the Verus Thor Active Case. Not only is it the perfect match for Galaxy S6 edge users that need a rugged solution against damage indoors and out, it’s bundled with a sturdy belt clip holster that doubles as a viewing stand.

Packed with a TPU cover and highly flexible polycarbonate, the Thor Active adds layers where it matters most — without bulking up your Galaxy S6 edge to the point it loses its appeal. It comes in a variety of colors to choose from, too.

5. Spigen Air Cushion Bumper Case

Spigen Air Cushion Case Bumper

One of our community favorites is Spigen’s Air Cushion Bumper Case for its see-through back shell and slim TPU bumper that raises the display just slightly from any flat surface.

The buttons along the side of the bumper are embossed for an easy press without sticking out from the rest of the case. There are 5 unique colors to pick from and each offer a clear back cover — allowing you to sport the sleek design of your Galaxy S6 edge.

Buy the Spigen Air Cushion Case Bumper

6. Samsung Clear Protective Cover

Samsung Clear Protective Cover

Last up is Samsung’s Clear Protective Cover for the Galaxy S6 edge that keeps original design a top priority while offering extra protection on each corner of the device.

This transparent cover is popular for its ability to handle minor impacts without overdoing it on layers or compromising the look of the Galaxy S6 edge. The camera, display, ports and buttons are all accessible while the case is worn, too. It even comes in a variety of matching colors including gold, green, silver and black.

Windows Insider app receives an update, forgets the changelog

Windows Insider app receives minor update without changelog

The Windows Insider app has received an update, bumping it up to version 2015.429.1747.169. Unfortunately there is no changelog included, so it is not known exactly whatis new in this release. We could imagine some general bug fixes, and performance improvements, but we can’t be certain.

With the Windows Insider app you can sign up for preview versions of future releases, such as Windows 10, as well as elect to be part of the fast or slow ring for updates. Users can give feedback, collect data, and add comments right from the app, all of which gets sent to Microsoft to improve future versions.

Hit the link below to grab the updated Windows Insider app on your phone now.

Microsoft's transformation isn't just words, we're now seeing the action

Microsoft keeps telling us its transforming, becoming something bigger and better than ever before. This past week shows that this isn’t just marketing talk, and that we’re ultimately the ones to benefit from this.

Just before Build 2015 began, I had the privilege to sit in on a special presentation by Microsoft’s General Manager of Developer Experience, Bryan Biniak. He was speaking to a room full of press from all over the world, gathered for the annual IFA Global Press Conference weekend, this year in the sunny climbs of Malta.

It was a big deal for the event, as they’d never had Microsoft on board as a partner before. But after the presentation, and now after the Build day 1 keynote, the puzzle pieces of Microsoft’s ambitious plans are starting to fit together.

Bryan Biniak

I’ll admit, it’s very easy to hear the talk and mark it down as an elaborate marketing strategy. But there were a couple of key quotes in last weeks presentation that make more sense than ever before after the Build keynote.

“If it touches a consumer, a business, we want to be there”

“A key thing since Satya Nadella came on (as CEO) is building bridges, opening up Microsoft software and services to everyone.”

And that’s exactly where we’re going. On a consumer level, Windows 10 will be on everything we use to work and play. Which other company can boast the same software running on a mobile device as on a games console? The Universal App Platform, carrier billing, unified store. Everything, everywhere. A truly unparalleled experience.

For developers though, the bridge building is going far and wide. Microsoft is openly welcoming Android, iOS and web developers to Windows 10. ‘Empowering’ each of them to leverage their already completed hard work and open up a new userbase and revenue stream where once they may have stayed away. New tools for developers using Mac OS X and Linux, too. Areas once out of reach brought to Windows 10.

The app gap is one of the Windows followers favorite topics to talk/complain about. It affects us all. Personally speaking, Pocket Casts closed my own app gap a little further this week, and the developers support for the platform is welcomed. No-one likes not being able to use the things their friends all talk about, or moving from another mobile platform to find their favorite apps just aren’t represented. It sucks. Microsoft knows this.

But one thing that can no longer be intimated, is that Microsoft is lazy. Microsoft should be doing more to get xxx service (insert Snapchat where appropriate) onto Windows and Windows Phone. With the new developer tools announced at Build, Microsoft is doing about everything it possibly can to get things rolling. Whether it works, maybe we’ll consider that more in 12-18 months from now.

So, empowering. Consumers, developers, creators, Windows 10 looks to have something for all of us. Microsoft is ever changing its business model, with one of the biggest the offering of Windows 10 as a free upgrade for the first year. It’s opening up new revenue streams to become less reliant on the likes of Windows to make its money.

And we’re all going to benefit. How much? That’s still the $ 64,000 question.

First impressions of the Micromax Canvas Laptab, the new Windows 2-in-1 device launched in India

Micromax Canvas Laptab

India’s leading handset maker, Micromax, today announced its maiden foray into the laptop category by launching the new Canvas Laptab, a 2-in-1 Windows convertible device that has a detachable keyboard, allowing it to be used as a standalone tablet.

The Laptab has been designed as a unique offering of decent specifications at an affordable price to accelerate PC adoption by first-time users, while also addressing the needs of more experienced people looking for a compact and portable device.

Micromax Canvas Laptab

The Canvas Laptab runs on Windows 8.1 and bundles Office 365 as well. Powered by the Intel Atom Processor Z3735F with speed up to 1.83GHz and 2GB RAM, the device features a 10.1-inch touch-enabled WXGA IPS display. There’s a 2MP camera at the front, as well as at the back. The Laptab packs in a 7,700 mAh battery that gives more than 10 hours of battery life according to Micromax’s claims. The device packs in pretty good specifications, and looks promising. Of course, we’ll have to test it out some more in real-world usage to give a judgement on the performance.

The Laptab drives home the portability message not just in its compact size but also in terms of connectivity with a 3G SIM card slot. While it’s a norm for most tablets in India, it’s a welcome addition on a convertible device that can be used for working on the move.

Micromax Canvas Laptab

The build quality is pretty good and has a metallic feel to it, but is a little heavy. I’m a Surface user, and the difference is quite noticeable. Of course, the latter is not available in India and is a much more expensive device. The keyboard connects to the tablet using a proprietary connector, but the connection could definitely be better. It doesn’t detach by itself, but a small nudge can dismantle the two. The Laptab doesn’t fold like a laptop, and essentially requires placing the tablet over the keyboard. That connection and detaching mechanism is the only oddity with the design in an otherwise nicely built device.

Micromax Canvas Laptab

Commenting on the launch, Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax Informatics Limited, said,

“At Micromax, we have always believed in bringing the best in class and innovative devices to the consumers and have always aimed to bridge the gap between actual consumer device requirement and available device offering and hence, the Laptab promises to bridge the same at a very consumer friendly price point. Today’s launch marks our entry into the PC segment, where we intend to drive category growth and not only garner an available market share. We believe that our vision complements the initiatives for Digital India, and we will be launching a range of exciting products over the next few months in the category.”

Micromax Canvas Laptab

The Laptab will be initially available exclusively on Amazon.in at a ₹14,999 starting from May 6, 2015. This compact 2-in-1 device looks pretty good on paper, and at this price, should offer the perfect blend of mobility and productivity to the consumers.

Marvel Future Fight is the mobile superhero game you've been waiting for

Marvel Future Fight is the mobile superhero game you've been waiting for

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens tomorrow in the US. It has been three long years since we’ve seen Marvel’s squad of superheroes team up against a common foe, and fans are hyped! What better way get even more hyped before the film (or keep the hype going after it ends) than a game featuring not only all of the Avengers, but also loads more Marvel characters all teaming up to save the world?

Today Netmarble released just such a game on mobile: Marvel Future Fight. The game lets players collect and build up a team of good and bad guys from the Marvel movies and comics and then put them to work stopping an interdimensional threat. Most excitingly, Marvel Future Fight actually looks and plays really well – it’s practically a successor to the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series.

Marvel Future Fight

Heroes and villains team up against a common threat

Marvel Future Fight features a story penned by Peter David, co-creator of Spider-Man 2099 and a prolific comics author. The narrative comes to life between levels through pictures of characters talking to each other – not the most exciting way to tell a story. And yet, the writing is actually quite clever! David nails the banter and humor we expect our heroes to rely on when the chips are down, and even jokes about the robotic villain Ultron’s origin having been changed in the latest Avengers movie.

The premise revolves around a mysterious apocalypse that has all but destroyed the future world. To save humankind from disaster, a dying Nick Fury sends the female robot Jocasta back in time to warn the Avengers. She must help them – and the player – build a team of heroes and villains strong enough to stop the dimension-hopping villains and save the world!

Marvel Future Fight

Heroes on a mission

Players start out with a team of three popular Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America (my fave), and Black Widow. You’ll take these heroes (and eventually others) out on a sprawling main campaign consisting of nine chapters, each with multiple missions to play through. Being a free to play game, it costs energy to go on these missions – you know the drill.

Marvel Future Fight

Once in battle, you have the choice of two control schemes: 1-Touch or Pad. The 1-Touch style lets you tap anywhere on screen to move there, and tap enemies to attack them. Pad adds a virtual stick on the left and an attack button on the right. Both styles have on-screen buttons for each character’s special moves, like Captain America’s shield throw and Hawkeye’s arrow barrage. I prefer the Pad style.

Running through short levels and pounding on bad guys proves quite fun. You can switch between your trio of heroes at any time. Each mission culminates in a boss, the first of which is (naturally) Ultron. You’ll want to call in Striker (helper) characters to help deal with these stronger foes.

Marvel Future Fight

Collect them all

At launch, Marvel Future Fight has over 30 characters to collect, including the standard movie Avengers, Spider-Man and some of his friends and enemies, Thor’s foes Loki and Malekith, and many more. You can unlock a character by finding a sufficient number of “Biometrics” for that character. These can be won from completing missions or by spending premium currency on Dimensions Chests, which award random prizes.

Marvel Future Fight has many of the trappings of the free to play format, such as the annoying energy mechanic. And eventually the missions start to get pretty hard, which will necessitate either some grinding or the purchase of premium currency.

Still, the game looks great, with faithful renditions of movie costumes for the characters who appear in films and comic costumes for those who haven’t. The familiar action-RPG gameplay and strong writing help make Future Fight a fight worth having for Marvel fans.

BlackBerry lowers BBM Custom PIN pricing for a limited time!

To go along with their device sale, BlackBerry is also offering a bit of a sale through their BBM Shop as well wherein you can grab a custom BBM PIN of your own for only 99 cents. Although some may have taken advantage of this offer earlier as it seemingly appeared early accidentally, BlackBerry has now made it official and is even offering those who paid $ 1.99 for a custom PIN to update their subscription to the new pricing.

Since launching in March, we’ve had many people express their love for their Custom PIN and share how easy it has been to add new contacts to BBM. Because we know you’re loyal to BBM, we don’t want you to miss out! We are making it easier than ever to get your Custom BBM PIN.

For a limited time, you can get a Custom PIN subscription from the BBM Shop for 99 cents per month.

Your Custom PIN is easier for you and your friends to remember and will add some personality. Use your nickname, your company name or something that’s personal to only you – the options are endless.

Remember, PINs must be 6-8 characters long, and can include numbers and letters only, and are not case sensitive. Don’t forget, special characters cannot be used.

Check out the video below on getting started with Custom PINS. The video uses an iPhone but the process is the same across the board.

As mentioned, if you already purchased a custom PIN and want to get in on the new, limited time pricing, you can update your subscription from your device by using the following directions.

  • Step 1: Make sure you download the latest version of BBM.

  • Step 2: Visit the BBM Shop and tap the Custom PIN Subscription icon.

  • Step 3: Tap ‘Update your Subscription’ and follow the instructions on the screen.

Here’s the real question though. Does the new, lower pricing make you any more likely to go ahead and purchase a new custom PIN? For me it did, I renewed my subscription at the 99 cent pricing last week and will keep it as long as it stays at that pricing.

Take a look at the computer powering your Apple Watch

The folks at ABI Research have given us a better look at the Apple Watch’s S1 computer-on-a-chip.

While it might be difficult to explicitly identify certain parts of the S1 due to Apple’s custom silicon design, it’s interesting to get a look inside the heart of the Apple Watch. According to ABI Research, the design of the S1 is, unsurprisingly, similar to the design of the systems of the iPhone and iPad:

“The design is an obvious variation from Apple’s smartphones, with many high-end functions / chips included that normally would not be found in a simple watch,” comments Jim Mielke, VP Engineering at ABI Research and head of the TeardownIQ group.

Unlike Apple’s custom A8 chip, which combines the CPU, GPU, and RAM onto a single die, the S1 packs in an entire computer system into a single, sealed package. These include the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC radios and the 8GB of on-board storage.

[The Deal You're Looking For] Star Wars KOTOR $2.99 On The Play Store And Amazon, Down From $9.99 (70% Off)

One of the best games ever made by LucasArts, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, landed on the Google Play store at the end of last year. The RPG is a complete and faithful port of the original KOTOR (its nickname among fans) which launched back in 2003 on PCs and consoles. As good as the game is, $ 10 may have seemed a little steep to some of you for a game that is over a decade old. Well, I’ve got some good news for you, you cheap Toydarians – Dropped to $ 3, the price has. Hmmmm. (sorry, I can’t resist a Yoda impersonation when the opportunity presents itself).

You can pick up Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on Google Play or the Amazon Appstore (a great way to spend those Amazon coins burning a hole in your pocket). Just do me a favor, don’t let the power of the force go to your head – I can’t stand a whiny Jedi.

Much has been said about HTC’s camera in the M9, but it ultimately comes down to this: It can take some really good pictures, if you’re patient and don’t mind getting out of Auto mode and shooting more manually. And today M9 mobile photogs have gotten a pretty big boost to their phones with the addition of support for the RAW format, which gives you far more control over the editing of a shot (while getting rid of the compression that comes along with JPGs).

It’s just a simple update of the HTC Camera app in Google Play, and from there you’ll choose “Raw camera” in the modes screen.

While the RAW update is only for the M9 at the moment, the app does add Crop-me-in mode HTC One M8 Eye and Desire Eye phones, and you now have the ability to remove modes if you don’t use them.

LG Optimus L90 On T-Mobile Receives Android Lollipop OTA Update

At $ 150, the LG Optimus L90 isn’t a high-end device. But now it’s a Lollipop-running running one. T-Mobile has announced that it is pushing out Android 5.0.2 to the device in an over-the-air update.

Once the goods have arrived, the phone will be left running software version D41520b. The update doesn’t do anything else for the entry-level device, but for nerds like us, it doesn’t really have to. This is the cream of the OTA crop. Well, the phone is still themed with LG’s software and tweaks, but you know, some folks are into that.

Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it’s like to live without 4G LTE – or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

NVIDIA launches its first GeForce beta graphics drivers for Windows 10

DirectX 12 test

NVIDIA has released new beta drivers for some of its its PC graphics chips. The beta drivers are the first that fully support Windows 10, with its DirectX 12 API.

The beta drivers, which have the version number 352.63, currently only support NVIDIA GeForce-based graphic cards from the 600, 700, and 900 series on desktops, and chips from the 600M, 700M, 800M and 900M series on notebooks. In addition, no notebooks from Fujitsu that use NVIDIA graphics chips are currently supported.

At the moment, there are no DirectX 12 games that can be played on PCs with these new NVIDIA beta drivers. Futuremark recently updated the Advanced Edition and Professional Edition versions of its 3DMark benchmark with a new API Overhead feature test that does use DirectX 12. However, the company said that it is not a GPU-based test and should not be used to compare graphics card performance. We will have to wait a little while longer for DirectX 12-based games to come out for a better comparison.
