Apple confirms that the Apple Watch might have trouble with your tattoos

Apple has updated the support page for the Apple Watch heart rate monitor, acknowledging that the device can have trouble getting a reading through tattoos.

Apple is acknowledging that the Apple Watch’s heart rate monitor, which uses light to read blood flow under the skin, has issues with some tattoos . iMore’s own testing found that the Apple Watch does indeed have difficulty getting heart rate information through tattoos with dark or solid colors. Apple’s support page relating to the heart rate monitor on the watch has been updated to reflect the issue.

From Apple:

Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance. The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings.

The Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor uses different spectrums of light to track blood flow through the user’s skin. For those experiencing problems between their tattoos and the watch, know that you can turn off wrist detection in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, which will prevent the device from automatically locking, though this will disable the use of Apple Pay.

Microsoft helps to launch the 3MF Consortium to create a better 3D printing file format

3D Printing

As promised last week, Microsoft has become one of the founding members of the new 3MF Consortium, a group of companies that want to launch a new file format for 3D printing that they claim will solve the “interoperability and functionality issues” when using current and older file formats with 3D printers.

The new file specification itself is called the 3D Manufacturing Format (3MF). The first version of the format has already been published by the Consortium and in fact is based on one that was already in development by Microsoft before the group was formed. The overall goals of the 3MF specification are that it should be:

  • Rich enough to fully describe a model, retaining internal information, color, and other characteristics;

  • Extensible so that it supports new innovations in 3D printing;

  • Interoperable and open;

  • Practical, simple to understand and easy to implement; and

  • Free of the issues inherent in other widely used file formats.

The other founding members of the 3MF Consortium are Dassault Systèmes, netfabb, HP; Shapeways, SLM Solutions Group and Autodesk. There’s no word on when the final version of the 3MF specification will be published. Microsoft added native support for 3D printing into Windows 8.1 in 2013.

How to pair an external heart rate monitor to Apple Watch

Although the Apple Watch has a built-in heart rate sensor, more serious training may require some external help.

While your Apple Watch’s heart sensor should perform just fine for passive monitoring, anyone training or in need of much more accurate data may be better off with a heart rate monitor strap. Luckily, the Apple Watch supports connecting a Bluetooth enabled strap or monitor. Once you pair it within Settings, you’re ready to go!

Keep in mind that while the Apple Watch should support many Bluetooth heart rate monitor straps, it may not support all of them: Straps that use older legacy Bluetooth technology may not be recognized, as was the case with an older Garmin strap I had laying around. Newer straps should work just fine, however. If your Apple Watch can’t connect but locates your monitor, make sure you haven’t accidentally paired with your iPhone. From my testing, you can’t pair an external monitor to two devices at once.

How to pair your external heart rate monitor with your Apple Watch

  1. Make sure your heart rate monitor is discoverable.

  2. Launch the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

  3. Tap on Bluetooth.

  4. Tap on the name of your device under Health Devices when it appears in order to pair it.

Meerkat brings live streams to Android, now available for download

The live video streaming app Meerkat is now available for download. The app was previously available as a closed beta, requiring invitations to unlock access.

Meerkat

So what’s Meerkat all about? It’s an app that enables you to broadcast live video to everyone on the Internet by linking your Twitter account. The stream ends once the broadcast has been killed. The company behind Meerkat has been accepting beta testers in a closed program, but now anyone can download the app from Google Play.

Linking through your Twitter account will see the app publish a tweet from your profile to alert followers that you’re broadcasting. As well as broadcasting to the world, Meerkat also lets you view other streams, but unfortunately there are no features to allow you to save a particular stream. While the app is available for download, do note that the listing still carries the beta tag.

Meerkat

Give the app a try and let us know how you get on.
